Plot Synopsis:
Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) is on the run from the U.S. Government when he tries to get rid of the rage inside.

The Bowley Review:
I was very excited to finally get the chance to see this. After seeing 2003′s “Hulk”, I wanted a sequel to freshen up the franchise. I really liked the Hulk when I was growing up, although I never actually read the comics or watched the cartoons. I grew up loving the idea that you could get pissed off, and smash things. Now, Edward Norton has been casted as Banner, and then I was set to watch this. I always thought Norton was a great actor, but I rarely saw him in movies. When I finally watched “Primal Fear”, I realized how amazing his acting is.

A few downfalls in this movie are very minor. No spoilers, so don’t worry. It obvious that Liv Tyler is Edward Norton’s love interest, but I don’t think it worked out as well as casting expected. They are fantastic on their own, but together, they are just okay. Another downfall is the ending. It felt way too short compared to the time we spend watching Banner run around. Now, let’s talk about the good things.

There is no lack of action in this one. There is a good amount of destruction (as expected), and I think the story is better developed than it’s previous installment. Yes, it is pretty similar to the first one, but the way that they wrote it, I just enjoyed it a lot more.

Edward Norton (Primal Fear, Fight Club, The Illusionist, American History X) is a fantastic Hulk. He really looks smart, but he seems a little bit scrawny. It’s almost like Liv Tyler was bigger than he was. When you think about it, I would expect Bruce Banner to be small was well. Liv Tyler (Armageddon, The Strangers, Reign Over Me, The Lord of the Rings) takes over the role of Elizabeth Ross, previously played by Jennifer Connelly. Liv Tyler’s acting was just as good, but I do prefer Jennifer Connelly for the role. I think she has the look to play Ross better. Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Planet of the Apes) was excellent. He knows how to act professional and be creepy at the same time. He looks a little short, but makes it up with aggression. Also, he’s 47 years old but could be 35 to me.

I highly recommend “The Incredible Hulk”. It is a great summer blockbuster, and is most enjoyable in the theaters with a large pepsi and a nice bag of popcorn. AMC should pay me to advertise their food stands.

Film: Enchanted
Directed By: Kevin Lima

Starring: Amy Adams, James Marsden, Patrick Dempsey, Susan Sarandon
Duration: 107 Minutes
Genre: Fantasy/Romance
Year: 2007

[ Trailer ] [ Official Website ]

Plot Synopsis:

Giselle (Amy Adams) meets the love of her life, and on the day of her wedding, is thrown from her animated fairy tale to the real world of new york.

The Bowley Review:
Before watching this, I didn’t know anything about it. I knew it had something to do with a fairy tale, but I had no idea what It was going to be like. I was very satisfied with watching it. It was very entertaining, and has a lot of clever fairy tale adaptions which made this story very original.

There were things with “Enchanted” that I didn’t like. I think it was intended, but Giselle seemed so oblivious to the real world that it got annoying. Yeah, it’s expected of her to not know anything but still. Some parts, it just seemed rude. Another negative was the ending. It seemed so short. The whole thing was building up till the end, and the final battle wasn’t that long. It good enough to be called an ending, so don’t think it’ll be a big disappointment.

Amy Adams (Catch Me If You Can, Taladega Nights: The Story of Ricky Bobby) did an excellent job playing a naive girl. It might sound sarcastic, but it’s not. Her role was written that way, and she did it perfectly. Her huge smile worked the audiences. James Marsden (X-Men, The Notebook, Disturbing Behavior, 27 Dresses) proves that he can play roles other than Cyclops from “X-Men”. I haven’t seen Patrick Dempsey (Made of Honor, Freedom Writers, Sweet Home Alabama) play a role where he needs to act like someone else. When I see him act, I think to myself, “I bet that is how he really acts in person”. Susan Sarandon (Stepmom, Alfie, Mr. Woodcock, Speed Racer) plays the witch just how she should be played. We all know from Sarandon’s previous roles that she can portray evil.

Overall, I do recommend this movie to those who have not already watched this. If you’ve seen it, then you can watch it again if you want. I wouldn’t watch it again, but I think it’s definitely worth watching once.

Starring: Charlie Cox, Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro
Duration: 128 Minutes
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy
Year: 2007

[ Trailer ] [ Official Website ]

Plot Synopsis:
Tristan Thorn (Charlie Cox) goes on a journey beyond the wall in promises to bring back a fallen star for the woman he loves.

The Bowley Review:
As much as I wanted to watch this, I never really felt like doing so. I love to watch movies, and sometimes, I want to watch things that I don’t have much interest in. I don’t know why, but I do. I’m glad I forced myself to sit down and watch this longer, because It was a really interesting film.

Like anything, the first few minutes seem to be the most boring of them all. You have to pay attention and learn things so you can understand everything else, and “Stardust” is no exception. It is worth the time to do so because it gets very exciting later on. The story is well written and the acting is good. The choice of casting is well done. I would never imagine Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro working together. I can’t even see them starring in a science fiction fantasy, but they’ve done a great job at it.

The ending wasn’t as great as the middle. I think it could have been better. After watching it, you’ll probably say “Why didn’t she just do this instead” or “If he did that, they would’ve been fine”. The ending wasn’t bad enough to affect the grade I’ve given.

If you like fantasy, give this a try. It’s very entertaining to watch, and doesn’t feel too long. You’ll enjoy it.

Film: The Mist
Directed By: Frank Darabont

Starring: Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden
Duration: 125 Minutes
Genre: Horror/Suspense
Year: 2007

[ Trailer ] [ Official Website ]

Plot Synopsis:
After a storm hits the town, David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his son go to the supermarket, only to watch the whole town get covered in a mysterious mist. This is a film adaption of Stephen King’s thriller “The Mist”.

The Bowley Review:
I’ve been wanting to watch this for a while, so I finally had the chance to do so. It was difficult to decide what grade I would give this, because I had mixed feelings about this. There were a lot of things I liked and a few I didn’t like, but I wasn’t sure whether to deduct points because the director probably wanted things to happen exactly like they did. If the director wanted me to hate someone, should I deduct points for hating her? I compromised on it.

“The Mist” has an interesting, simple plot, and even though it may look so simple that there’s nothing to wait for but loud noises and scares, it’ll prove you wrong. The only problem is that I didn’t feel like it was scary enough. It was very easy for me to sit in the dark and watch this without twitching. The horror is average, but the ending makes up for it. I should also warn you that the beginning feels slow, but all movies pretty much feel that way.

Thomas Jane (The Punisher, Dreamcatcher, Face Off) has done a very convincing job portraying a father and a leader. The first time I saw him in “The Punisher”, I thought he was a good actor and has the skill to be a successful actor. Marcia Gay Harden (Into the Wild, Mystic River, The Invisible) does a good job as well, although I hated her so much. Her character was meant to be hated, so I give more props to the director and writers for choosing Harden. The rest of the cast did their respectable parts to make this movie as authentic as possible.

Overall, this movie is definitely worth watching. It has everything you need to enjoy it. There is good acting, a good simple plot, and enough twists and turns to keep you from getting bored.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Film: Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Directed By: Nicholas Stoller

Starring: Jason Segel, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, Russell Brand, Bill Hader, Paul Rudd, Liz Cackowski, Jonah Hill
Duration: 110 Minutes
Genre: Comedy/Romance
Year: 2008

[ Trailer ] [ Official Website ]

Plot Synopsis:
After getting dumped by his famous girlfriend Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell), Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) takes a trip to Hawaii to try and forget about her and unfortunately ends up finding out that she is there too with another man.

The Bowley Review:
To be honest, I was barely interested in watching this. I wanted to watch it, but I wasn’t excited about it and I didn’t care if I couldn’t watch it. A big thing that turned me off to this was the fact that I don’t know who the lead actor is, and I was worried that he only got the role because he wrote the story. I should have more faith in actors and actresses who are not as highly known as others because eventually I will be impressed and know their names. I had the same worries when I went to see “Superbad”, but they impressed me too and look where they are. Let’s talk about the cast, shall we?

Jason Segel (Knocked Up, Can’t Hardly Wait, Slackers) has done a wonderful job. Like I said earlier, I had my doubts. I worried that his performance would turn out like Eric Bana in “Hulk”, but I was wrong. He was really funny. It was easy to associate him with his character because he looked the part, and because I don’t remember seeing him before, I didn’t think of anyone else he could be besides his character Peter. Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars, Pulse, Heroes) did a great job. I didn’t think she could pull of the type of character she had to play, which to me was like a bitch, but after seeing this, I was convinced. She played a typical character but in a memorable way. Her boyfriend in the movie, played by Russell Brand (Penelope), was fantastic. Strangely enough, he was my favorite character. He was a dick, but he was so cool at the same time that it was weird. He’s funny, and he says stupid things that it’s hard not to like him. He also has an accent, which is pretty awesome. If you have time, you should visit his Wikipedia page. He has done a lot of work, and it’s interesting to read about it. We then have Bell’s opposite, played by Mila Kunis (That 70′s Show, Family Guy) who isn’t as annoying as I expected. I really thought that the annoying way she talked on “That 70′s Show” was the way she really talked, but she could actually sound normal, and she did. Paul Rudd (Friends, Over Her Dead Body, The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Jonah Hill (Superbad, Accepted, Knocked Up), and Bill Hader (Superbad, Hot rod) all have smaller roles in the film. Hill and Rudd did fine jobs, but I didn’t really like Hader’s character as much as I did when he was in “Superbad”.

There is only one thing I can think of that I didn’t like about this movie. Writers made the mistake of not casting a hotter opposite to Bell’s character. You’d think that if someone were to try to help a guy move on, it would be with someone who is way hotter. I just don’t think Mila Kunis is hotter than Kristen Bell, or that hot at all (no offense). I think they made a similar error in “Over Her Dead Body”, having Lake Bell take Paul Rudd away from Eva Longoria Parker. In a way, I guess Rudd’s character didn’t really have a choice since Parker’s character was dead, but whatever. This error isn’t the reason why I gave this the minus, I just didn’t feel like this was an A+.

In the end, I highly recommend this movie. It may not seem like the most appealing choice, but you’ll get your money’s worth and leave with a big smile of satisfaction on your face. If you don’t want to watch it, you better watch it anyway because I said so.

Grade: A-

Questions for the Reader:
1. Who’s hotter? Kristen Bell or Mila Kunis?
2. Who has actually watched “Veronica Mars”? Is that any good?
3. Do you agree or disagree with me when I said that Eva Longoria is way prettier than Lake Bell?
4. Is Paul Rudd funny, or really funny?

Nancy Drew

Film: Nancy Drew
Directed By: Andrew Fleming

Starring: Emma Roberts, Tate Donovan, Josh Flitter, Max Thieriot
Duration: 99 Minutes
Genre: Mystery/Adventure
Year: 2007

[ Trailer ] [ Official Website ]

Plot Synopsis:
When her dad lands a job in LA, famous small town detective Nancy Drew moves into a mansion where a mystery occurred, and uses her free time sneaking around looking for clues to solve the case while juggling her life as a teenager.

The Bowley Review:
Nancy Drew is a popular character in the world and the book series is very popular as well, so I was curious to what this would be like. I know, it’s more like a children’s story but I don’t think it’s necessarily only for them. It may not have the big time action like the big blockbuster movies have these days, but it’s simple and entertaining and that’s pretty much why it earned the grade it received. i’m slightly bias because I do enjoy some mysteries once in a while.

Emma Roberts (Unfabulous, Aquamarine) was very entertaining to watch. Since I’ve never seen any of her previous works, it was simple to believe that she was Nancy Drew, and whenever I see her, I’ll probably be reminded of this character. Even though the writers wrote how he character dressed and acted, I guess its appropriate to say that I liked her character as well. It’s hard to tell if she did a good job acting because I don’t know what she is really like, but I think it’s safe to say that she did well and will probably be in future sequels. Also, I was interested in reading that she’s the daughter of actor Eric Roberts and the niece of Julia Roberts. It’s all new to me.

Well, with the good, there is the bad. The mystery in the movie was pretty simple but I just watched and enjoyed. I didn’t really try to solve it, so the ending was surprising to me. I probably could’ve figured it out, but I didn’t care to. I also didn’t like the little kid that was always hanging around. I found him to be pretty annoying. Other than that, nothing is really too bad that I need to mention.

Overall, as much as I enjoyed this, I can’t really recommend this because I don’t think people who are not children would enjoy this. I’m simple, and most things entertain me, but that’s not the case for most people. There reviews were mixed, so you be the judge on whether you should watch this or not.

Grade: B-

Iron Man

Film: Iron Man
Directed By: Jon Favreau

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges
Duration: 126 Minutes
Genre: Action/Adventure
Year: 2008

[ Trailer ] [ Official Website ]

Plot Synopsis:
When weapons he designed are being used by a terrorist group called “The Ten Rings”, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is forced to take matters into his own hands and stop them with a powerful suit he created.

The Bowley Review:
If the trailer isn’t enough to make you want to run to the theater and watch this, then you need to get your eyes looked at by a doctor. Besides being a rich guy in bad ass armor, there is enough action in this movie to keep you sweating. Marvel Comics is going nowhere else but up, and every project they are involved in only keeps getting better. It received a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is extremely hard to do and a very impressive feat.

I’ll start with the bad like I did in the other review. The only bad things I could think of is that the final battle seemed a bit shorter than it should’ve been, and the hand held device (I won’t mention what, but you’ll know) seemed too convenient to have.

Now, let’s talk about the good. This movie is filled with a lot of action, a great plot, a bit of romance, some comedy, and great music. There is nothing more you could’ve wished for. If you do watch this, there is a small scene at the end after the credits. It’s short and might not be worth waiting for unless you know what it means. I suggest waiting to see it, and then finding out online what it means.

Robert Downey Jr. has done an amazing job as Tony Stark. He does a wonderful performance, especially because he is like Tony Stark. Robert Downey Jr. has had a rough career as well as a rough life. He’s very famous, and started having problems and going downhill. Also, he can pull off the act of a bad ass who we’ll cheer for. He was definitely my favorite character in this one. Gwyneth Paltrow (Seven, Shakespeare in Love, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) plays Virginia “Pepper” Potts, the conservative secretary with the sex appeal. I thought her name was really “Pepper Pots”, and I thought it sounded stupid but now that I know that it is just a nickname, i’m fine with it. I really like her character because she is the secretary, but she isn’t a big slut or anything of the sort. She’s conservative, smart, and she’s organized. She’s a good balance to the film. Jeff Bridges (Tron, The Big Lebowski, Seabiscuit, Stick It), who I figured out was Jeff Bridges (it’s harder to tell with his haircut and beard), does a good job as well. I don’t particularly like his character, but I’m sure that’s what he was going for. Last, we have Terrence Howard (Crash, Hustle & Flow, Idlewild, August Rush, Awake), and he has also done a fine job. He is the supporting character, and he knows how to do it well. He is the kind of actor that can make you like him and also piss you off if he felt like it. That is why he is an Academy Award winner.

I would definitely recommend this movie to everyone. It’s perfect for adults, teens, and even kids. You will enjoy this. The CGI is very clean and convincing. My brother said it was better than “Transformers”, and I don’t know whether I agree with him or not, but it really is that good. A sequel is already in the works and has a release date of April 30th, 2010. Isn’t it amazing how they can already tell us that kind of stuff.

Grade: A+

Questions for the Reader:
1. Who would you rather see inside the Iron Man suit besides Robert Downey Jr.?
2. Would you rather be rich or have a bad ass suit like that?
3. Does anyone find it weird that planning for future movies are announced so quickly? I was reading about the Saw series, and they started writing a script in march for Saw 5, but saw 6 seems like it’s already planned to happen as well. It’s overwhelming.

Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay

Film: Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
Directed By: Jon Hurwitz, Hay Schlossberg

Starring: Kal Penn, John Cho, Neil Patrick Harris
Duration: 102 Minutes
Genre: Comedy
Year: 2008

[ Trailer ] [ Official Website ]

Plot Synopsis:
Harold and Kumar, who are on a plane towards Amsterdam, are mistaken for terrorists and are sent to Guantanamo Bay prison.

The Bowley Review:
Harold and Kumar are back, and the story continues immediately after the first one. “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” was a fantastic movie. It was funny, racy, and full of action. As fantastic as this was, I am sad to say that it isn’t better than it’s predecessor.

I’ll start with the bad, because there isn’t much and after, I can talk nonstop about the good. Anyway, the first movie introduced us to some racism. A lot of it was funny, and it never got to a point where it became annoying or just ignorant. Escape From Guantanamo Bay did pass that line where the racism was annoying. There was just too much of it, and it stopped being funny. The rest of the movie was hilarious, so I didn’t mind it so much.

John Cho (Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Better Luck Tomorrow, American Pie series) is amazing. He plays a typical asian guy, and he does it in style. He is the more conservative one, and it shows. He is always funny, and I bet that it’s going to be really hard for him to be casted as a role that isn’t Harold Lee. Kal Penn (Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Superman Returns, Epic Movie, Van Wilder) reprises his role as the trouble maker of the group. I really liked him in the first one, but I didn’t like his as much in this one. His antics went way to far to the point that I thought he was too stupid and if i was Harold, I would’ve shot Kumar for being so stupid. He made too many wrong decisions, and some of them should be obvious to those with a brain. I still like him, but not as much as before. Neil Patrick Harris (Starship Troopers, Doogie Howser, Undercover Brother) is fantastic. He is my favorite character in this movie, even though he’s not really one of the main characters. I love the fact that he plays himself. I’d also like to mention that Paula Garcés plays the role of Maria Quesa Dilla. Wow, isn’t her last name pretty cool or what?

If you’re going to watch this, you must promise me one thing… Promise me that when you watch this, you’ll remember “Harold’s 80′s haircut and “Kumar’s Poem”. They are fantastic, and my most favorite scenes. When you see it, it’ll be the highlight of your day as well.

I highly recommend this movie to everyone with a sense of humor. I do not recommend this to young kids though because weed is bad and kids are way to easily influenced. Besides that, everyone else will enjoy this. I do urge you to watch this first one before this if you haven’t already done so.

Film: Invincible
Directed By: Ericson Core

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Elizabeth Banks, Greg Kinnear
Duration: 128 Minutes
Genre: Drama
Year: 2006

[ Trailer ] [ Official Website ]

Plot Synopsis:
A 30-year old bartender named Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg) goes to a Philadelphia Eagles football tryout and lives his dream.

The Bowley Review:
Whenever I know that I’m going to watch a flick starring Mark Wahlberg, I always expect something good. “Invincible” looks like a good movie, and It’s based on a true story. I’m not the biggest fan of sports, but I didn’t have a problem watching this. Even though I knew in the end that he was going to succeed, I still worried every time he got close to failing.

I really like the story and how he progresses. There isn’t really anything I didn’t like, but It just didn’t have the A+ feel to it. I’m surprise Disney did this. It just doesn’t seem like a project they would do, but it’s not like they produce crap.

Mark Wahlberg (Shooter, The Italian Job, The Perfect Storm) is always a good actor to watch. He always does a great job, and he did that same job in this. Even though he acts the same way in almost all his roles, he always makes me believe he’s someone else. Acting is just natural for him. Elizabeth Banks (Spiderman, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Definitely, Maybe) does a good job as well, although I didn’t feel her role was big enough for me to even judge her acting in this movie. He does a good job playing the love interest while giving off that “girl next door” vibe. Greg Kinnear (Mystery Men, Stuck On You, Robots) did a good job, and actually looks a lot like the real coach. Unfortunately, I didn’t like how he portrayed the coach, unless he was going for that weak coach feel. Greg Kinnear tends to give off a weaker performance in my opinion. I still enjoy the movies I see him in.

Overall, I’d highly recommend this movie. It’s inspirational, full of action and drama, and it’s a good way to kill some time. There is no way you wouldn’t enjoy this.

Grade: B+

Questions for the Reader:
1. Can you believe Mark Wahlberg is only 36 years old? I don’t know about you, but to me, it feels like he was been around way too long to be only 36. To me, he might look 36 but I thought he was way older. How old did you think he was before I mentioned it?
2. What’s your favorite Mark Walhberg movie?
3. On a scale from one to ten, how would you rate Walhberg’s acting in general, ten being terrific and one being horrible?

Train Man

Film: Train Man
Directed By: Shosuke Murakami

Starring: Takayuki Yamada, Miki Nakatani
Duration: 101 Minutes
Genre: Romance/ Comedy
Year: 2005

[ Trailer ] [ Official Website ]

Plot Synopsis:
A nerd, who his internet friends call Train Man (Takayuki Yamada), saves a woman from a drunk man on a train
and falls in love with her. He then learns to start being open to live and love.

The Bowley Review:
When I read the information, it sounded like it would be worth watching. I didn’t know anything about it, only what the plot is. After watching it, I thought it was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It’s no wonder why there is also a manga and television drama about it. The best part is that it is based on a true story. Even though it being based on a true story isn’t much with a plot like this, it’s still a very inspirational to watch.

For the lead role, we have Takayuki Yamada (Eragon), who does a fantastic job playing a nerd. Since I’ve never seen him before, it is easy for me to associate him with his character. I’m not very interested in watching “Eragon”, so if you’ve seen it or are going to see it, let me know how big his role is and if he looks anything like the nerd on the poster. Anyway, he does a fantastic job playing Train Man. He wasn’t trying to be funny, but he was. It’s fun to watch someone learn and become a bigger part of society. I think we can all relate to his character, not just asking girls out, but opening up to new things. Hermess, played by Miki Nakatani (Ringu, Ringu 2, Rasen, Chaos) has done a great job as well. I own all four of the movies I included, so I probably need to watch them again because I don’t remember seeing her. Anyway, since I didn’t recognize her either, I could believe in her character. I think they’ve done an amazing job acting together. With Hermes, I couldn’t really tell whether she liked Train Man or not. It was like a mystery, even though we all know how romantic comedies usually end.

I really enjoyed watching this. The story is great. I really like how it develops, and seeing how his other internet friends react is great. I remember laughing really loud a bunch of times, but it was okay because there was this white lady in front of me laughing just as loud so I didn’t feel embarrassed, although everyone was laughing out loud as well.

There was one reason why I didn’t give this the perfect A+, and it doesn’t even seem like a good enough reason to do so. At the end, it takes a really long time for Train Man to talk, and I became somewhat impatient. It’s not a very long scene, but I feel that if I’m going to give a movie an A+, I have to honestly say that everything was perfect. Even though I didn’t give this the perfect score, I still consider it one of my favorite movies.

Overall, it’s a great movie and I highly recommend this to everyone. If you don’t like it, then I don’t like you… clara… haha!

Grade: A-

Questions for the Reader:
1. Do you think the lead male character is good looking (If you haven’t see this, pretend he has a nice haircut and nice clothes)? I read this comment somewhere where this girl said “Typical movie where they choose a good looking guy and make him look nerdy”. Even with the makeover, I think he still looks goofy and nerdy.
